The Philippines is ramping up its nickel processing capabilities to meet the growing global demand for the metal, used in electric vehicle batteries and other applications.

Following in the footsteps of Indonesia, which saw significant investments in processing plants after imposing a ban on unprocessed nickel exports in 2020, the Philippines aims to strengthen its capacity to process nickel. Environment Minister Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga emphasized the importance of positioning the country within the value chain rather than solely as a supply chain participant, particularly given nickel's crucial role in electric vehicle (EV) battery production.

Ceferino Rodolfo, the undersecretary for trade, revealed the government's plan to establish three additional processing plants to enhance nickel processing capacity and elevate the value of the country's nickel output. Economic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan echoed the sentiment, highlighting the strategic importance of processing nickel ore to meet not only economic but also energy and national security objectives.

With vast untapped mineral reserves, the Philippines is exploring potential incentives to attract mining companies and unlock its mining potential. Last year, the country produced 35.14 million dry metric tons of nickel ore, marking a notable increase of 19% from the previous year.

This initiative underscores the Philippines' commitment to leveraging its natural resources to meet global demand while creating opportunities for economic growth and development.
